Reigeluth: we need a common knowledge base for instructional design

Reigeluth c.s. think it is time to formulate a common knowledge base with a consistent terminology in the field of instruction design technology. Some of their considerations:

  1. The amount of research finding in the field of instruction theories is large and growing. Their point of view that we need a common knowledge base in order to be able to compare the research findings. It should be possible to analyse and summarize these finding and try to formulate a set of more generic principles and concept which are in principle relevant.
  2. Instruction should be different in different situation.
  3. There are also all kind of developmental experiences and procedures. These experiences and approaches are context relevant. You always have to translate the generic principles to a specific situation.
  4. The general principles are not detailed enough to support the instructional designer top create high quality education.
  5. The basic idea behind instruction design theory are the design theories from other disciplines. One important result is that all designers share some similar experiences. These design experiences could be used in developing an instructional design theory. (see post).
  6. R. and cs formulated very careful some crucial definitions and descriptions, what is instruction theory and what is instruction design theory. In their book they have write some basic ideas to be applied in elaborating the  ‘base’.

Some questions:

  • differences with course design
  • curriculum design is also design. I don’t agree with the opinion of R. So, a curriculum design theory  ?????
  • the focus is not design processes, only focus on how you could do something, not how can you make/develop/design something
