Curriculum development and design: main characteristics

The description of the work of a Curriculum designer is based on the same description for a chemical Engineer.

Curriculum developers are responsible for the design and operation of processes and of products and their application in a curriculum. The use a’ system’  approach, enabling the prediction and the behaviour od the curriculum as a whole and of the individual courses.

Once a curriculum is designed, curriculum developers should be involved (together with the teachers) in its construction and subsequent operation.

Hence in terms of education a  curriculum designer will undertake courses in Learning psychology, Education research, Educational technology (ICT), Sociology and Didactics,. And also Course development, Teaching skills, Using tests. But also advising skills, planning of change, Educational policies and economics, Applied research, …. And very important he of she should be interested and partly understand the subject matter studied by the students in the curriculum.

A practising Curriculum designer will often find that the data he/she requires is either unreliable or incomplete and hence, he/she must make sound judgements based on the basis sciences to determine appropriate simplifying assumptions, while at the same time satisfying legal constrains, criteria of study success, the needs of the labour market, …, …

The corner stone of any curriculum project is the development of a learning environment(s) in which students are able to master the aims and objectives of the curriculum. Three underlying questions should be answered in curriculum development:
(1) what are these aims and objectives,  (2) how will students learn and (3) how can we support these learning processes in the learning environment. From the answer on these questions the curriculum designer will then go on and add more detail in order to come up with a fully optimized learning environment, providing the most efficient, effective, safe and economic route from the students to master the aims end objectives.

From the education research, learning psychology all kinds of useful results are provide to the curriculum designer. But there is mostly no clear answer how to  develop the specific curriculum. Here starts the design process for the Curriculum designer. How can he of she make the correct decisions necessary to make an effective and … learning environment.

How the curriculum designer can handle the incompleteness of data and research results in developing a curriculum in analysed in de post xxxxxxxxx.. The analyses follows the approach of engineering design sciences. Part of the analysis are the research results and expert experiences in then field of curriculum or educational development.
