Characteristics of design
-
- Design is goal oriented and normative. It assist the creation of something. An important aspect is that the design theory helps to make decisions how to design instruction.
- Main tasks in designing: Formation and exploration of a set of alternative solutions that satisfy a set of constraints and criteria and the selection of an alterative on the basis of a priority role. This key activity is using theoretical guidance.
- In the design theories conceptual entities are used and a workable artefact designs and plans for the construction of the artefact are applied. And there is the relation with the main theories available in the domain.
In the design theories a functional decomposition is made. Als operational principles of the processes can be formulated to support the designer.

Application of the design approach described above in the field of IDT
IDT provides the structural framework within which specific instructional theories can be analysed and compared. This statement is for me the reason to follow R.’s approach in describing course and curriculum design including the approach of Tony Earl.
Features IDT should en related to different, local instructional theories. ID presents a larger framework of the IDT.
-
- Focus is on decisions
- Functional decomposition: layered subproblems that correspond to functions carried out by the designed artefact that enable it to fulfil its purpose(s). For each layer there is / are subdesign theories how to act are available and used by instructional designers.
- The following layers are selected (using existing models and procedures)
content
strategy
message
control
representative
media logic
data management
