- Factors: observations, thoughts, theories, laws, considerations, trends, beliefs or opinions. (So, factors are not the final aspects/characteristics). These factors can be found everywhere: books, colleagues, students, scientific insights. They don’t include morale statements , etc. But yes psychological factors, social factors, economy, (see essay On context)
- If you have a clear description of the context it is more easy to make decisions in step 4. The correct and detailed formulation may take some time. You should be very careful to select factors with are ‘solution’: always look at the principles behind is. may be there is another solution.
- Which factors are rightly chosen? You have a good feeling, maybe later is appears to be correct or not. You think it is interesting. Factors which are novel and appropriate (mate van originaliteit).
Analysis and reflecting are crucial. Formulating factors will take some time. - Other , more official requirements (registration, ergonomics, facilities, production etc of the surroundings) should be written down, and considered later in the design process. However, as a designer you will not forget these requirements when designing. But you should not be steered by these requirements (You have to beat them cleverly).
- when are you ready? Are the issues of appropriate/relevant to the context, appealingness, enough variability, not only factors close to the context. The number of factors is open.
- This selection in step 2 is not the context. The factors have to be turned into a composition.
