Competency based education, why?

Why?

You have to make a  decision about changes in the curriculum: where can you find the considerations to make these decisions? How to keep the quality and level of the  curriculum or even increases both.

  • How to improve to preparation of the students to be able to work in the professional field? How to realize a good functioning starting professional who is prepared for the future developments in the discipline (LLL)?
  • How to prepare for LongLifeLearning? How to prepare for the future?

you have to know:

  1. What should a starting worker able to do? In what situation? What quality is expected? What should he able to do after 5 year experiences: how can he prepared for this. Use available info! Have interviews to have answers in their words. Combine later on with available list of competencies. See also trends.
  2. Which skills, knowledge, attitudes en so competencies are necessary (see informatics)Use available info
  3. What are the trends? Same analyses. Use available info
  4. Do this for different functions in the professional field. Use available info
  5. Formulate competencies. Use available info. (maybe prepare an overview of possible tasks and competencies in advance: they can check/select and add with additional context. Check with available set aims. Compare with competencies of other institutes. There are different possibilities (informatics, watermanagement/stedenbouw/verloskunde).Welke moet je wanneer gebruiken? Kan het niet simpeler.
  6. Discuss with professional field.
  7. Check competencies versus courses: can you expect the competency could be mastered? If not formulate solutions in the existing program based on tasks, context, quality criteria. What can be done in school, what should/could be done in the professional field. Think of learning lines for a competency or combination of competencies.
  • More cases and possibly also projects are needed. What  positive effects can be expected? How can you arrange cases/projects  in your curriculum or course (F2F or Moodle) without lowering the level a the curriculum? A project will take a lot of student time.  Students learn very much, but you have to plan (f.e. using sub competencies).

prepare instruments in stead of doing research or prepare instruments which can be used in interviews the results will be discussed later on with the professional field:
(make a schedule that professional can use to indicate important situations en give information to make a cases.)To be able to check with competencies and tasks should be very nice (something like informatics or TN). Tasks, knowledge/skills/attidues/problems/situations, competences (see PP for Pakistan!!))

(an then summarize in the instrument to be able to discuss the program and the aims with the professional field. Prepare in advance in relation with the above overview. And also presents possibilities for cases/projects.)

(And then didactical rules for mastering specific competences plus typical Teaching/learning activities)

(blueprints???) Not necessary if you want to stick to your existing program.

Step by step participants will dicuss the overviews and found the competencies (and possible subject for cases etc)

  • Government is pushing for competencies without saying how this should be done. What are to + and – consequences? How can you adapt to these needs?

combine this question with another question, this is more rewarding. See lists of points, but maybe also quality assurence)

  • More active learning or supporting self study? How and what? Why? What to do in Moodle?
  • Include other study materials like video, games, ….,  etc.  in your course. Where? Consequences?

Discuss in team because there is always a kind of logic in the way the courses are planned.

still need need an overview of the main aims (and competences)
Discuss blueprints.

  • Need to introduce new subjects. What other subjects can be omitted? How can you decide?

just ask the professional field. But often are new competencies included

  • Is more training in  the competencies necessary for the students?

see above: make a matrix

  • Where could you start with improvements? Why? How?

What is most important , easy to do and high possibility to be implemented. But always: first serious pilots

So you need a list of competencies and learning objectives, description  of the contents (short).
How can you simply summaries a series of competencies.

For answering these question you can decide ad hoc based on your experiences and what you know. Or you can develop a systematic description (blueprint) of the educational learning and teaching process which is necessary to achieve your aims. You have to analyse a number of crucial elements (aims, professional tasks, competencies, didactical principles, ….) and ‘design’ the curriculum.

The questions are  the beginning of the design   process.

But why are the elements of a systematisch description necessary?

The basic thing is the learning process and the learning environment (see post curriculum design)

The corner stone of any curriculum project (and for the course???)  is the development of a learning environment(s) in which students are able to master the aims and objectives of the curriculum. (so their could be possibilities to support different learning styles, so room for independent learning)

Three underlying questions should be answered in curriculum development:  (1) what are these aims and objectives,  (2) how will students learn and (3) how can we support these learning processes in the learning environment. From the answer on these questions the curriculum designer will then go on and add more detail in order to come up with a fully optimized learning environment, providing the most efficient, effective, safe and economic route (and valued and will liked) from the students to master the aims end objectives.

maybe we should define aims different because aims and objectives are not describing all aspects of what people properly. They split up the real world. For example you still  have to explain the aims/objectives of a course in an introduction to the module. Students have to develop understanding of the objectives. The teacher should have insight in all aspect of the learning of a certain subject

Dit zijn andere vragen dan Tylor en anderen gebruiken. What are the differences and what are the consequences for curriculum development
